The Key to Success | Focus on One

the key to success focus on oneThe key to success is to focus on one. For many years I tried building a business either online or offline. I have always had a full time job but I have always wanted my own business.

I tried so many things over the years. From having a lawn mowing round to having my own bookkeeping business (I never got past the first lesson with that one!) I tried MLM/Network marketing businesses, a writing your own eulogy business, trading online and even invented a game (because of my procrastination someone else thought of it and made a mint!)

I was always advised to focus on just one thing. But I knew better…and continued to fail.

It has taken a long time to get that advice to sink in. But it really is one of the keys to success for me. Focus on one thing and one thing only. Find your true passion and make it count. I’ll keep saying it the key to success focus on one thing.

Don’t Focus on Many!

It took me over 30 years of working and trying different businesses to find my passion. I thought I had it many times and would get all excited with a project only to have a setback on it. That was the time I would give up. Try something else, get excited again “Yay at last I have found my passion!” only to crash and burn a week later when I would have yet another setback and give up.

But I never stopped trying. The thing is sometimes I would go on trying in a particular niche for too long. Like Grief.

the key to success

I have had a couple of grief websites over the years and all toll I have made around $200 from these businesses. Over a 4 year period. Thats around $50 a year income. Lucky I had a full time job! Of course while I was working on this business I was trying to focus on other little side hustles to make some money. None of them worked. Sometimes the key to success takes a while to sink in!

You would have thought after slaving away giving great content to people, listening to them and really helping them out, that the universe would have rewarded me with a successful and financially rewarding business wouldn’t you? But no. The universe was telling me for 4 years there is no money in grief. Did I listen? Yes, eventually. After 4 years and $200. Ok I know. I am a very slow learner.

The Key to Success Focus On One

the key to success focus on oneThe lesson could not be more obvious to me now. FOCUS ON ONE THING AND ONE THING ONLY! The key to success focus on one!

The research I have done lately with all the gurus, all the multi millionaires and successful people is abundantly clear. They all have a laser beam focus on what they are good at and nothing else.

Sure they have passive streams of income from other sources but they have experts who look after those things for them. They focus on what they love and what they are good at. The key to success focus on one!

So if you have your hat in the ring of 2 or 3 major projects and are wondering why your not successful maybe now you know why. If you have 3 successful ventures I would like to know how you did it. Chances are if you do they are all related to the one thing you love doing.

Your Action Steps

  1. Find your passion. Really work on what it is that you love doing. What do you love doing that you would do even if you weren’t being paid?
  2. Once you know what that is turn it into a business.
  3. Give up any other side hustles or part time things that are not working.
  4. Focus totally on the one thing and the one thing only!
  5. Watch the universe open up and help you.
  6. The key to success, focus on one!

  1. Great piece, Kevin, and great advice! Focus and dedication are vital, and having too many irons in the fire scatters that focus and dedication to the wind.

  2. Hey Kevin,

Great post. Just like Dan Pena says ‘focus on the few not the may’ but in your case you’ve narrowed it down to just the one thing which I completely agree with.

It’s amazing how many of us fall into the trap of trying to do too many things all at once and end up achieving nothing and go back to square one. I am the culprit of this and have been on several occasion. Its as if our mind is accustomed to doing things a certain way and unless we give it a lot of thought and understanding we will keep on doing these same mistakes over and over again and keep complaining about it without realising what it is we’re doing wrong.

There’s also the great Russian proverb that says ‘if you chase two rabbits, you will not catch either one.’

So, lets take heed of Kevin’s wise post and make the effort to change our way of thinking.

    Thanks Kevin,

  3. Yes, focusing on one thing is important Kevin. I’m fortunate that I am doing two things I love – working with young people to help them reach their full potential and creating a blog/business that helps people become their best version in all areas of life. This is working for me now but my plan for the future is to focus just on my blog – I love getting up each morning and working on it. I can spend hours on it and not get bored or ‘sick of it.’ This is when you know you have found your calling.

    Another value rich article Kevin.

    Thanks for sharing.
